For something so small, the implications are so huge! Seeds are at the heart of gardening, yet we often don't think about the art and science of saving seed. In this workshop, we will collectively explore the importance of seedsaving, and how we can each start saving our own seed. The workshop will have a strong practical focus, actively engaging everyone in discussion, and designing a seed saving plan for our gardens. Whether you have been gardening for many years, or hope that this season with be your first, all are welcome!
Join this workshop to learn the fundamentals of seed saving in your backyard! You will learn:
As a child, Sahar watched her parents garden, but never truly participated in the affair. Many years later, sitting in a large lecture hall at university, pursuing a degree in international development and wondering what role she would play, it all clicked: Agriculture! Soon enough, she was the one in the garden, learning as much as she could and supporting students in their efforts to grow food and foster community ties. She sees the garden as a true classroom where all topics, previously divided, come together and demand integration. The more Sahar learns, the more humbled she is by nature. Sahar is currently a student at the University of British Columbia, a soon-to-be practicum student at the UBC Farm, and a previous seed saving intern working with Mel Sylvestre. Sahar is far from an expert, but loves collaborating with others, sharing her experience, and inviting others to share their knowledge and stories.
