What Are We Reading

BOOK 003 | Men without Women

The new collection of short stories from Japanese literary icon Haruki Murakami, might be a perfect introduction to the writer’s work. The seven stories highlight most of Murakami’s approaches and themes, his foibles and tropes. The stories include both the realistic and the fantastic, the two strands of Murakami’s fiction, and feature such Murakami obsessions as bars, the Beatles, jazz, stories within stories, literary homages and, well, men. Lots of men.

As the title suggests, Men Without Women foregrounds male characters, but “without” is something of an overstatement. There is no shortage of women in these stories, and while the focus may be the effect that relationships between women and men have on the male partner, those effects are, more often than not, a two-way street.

The idea that Men Without Women makes for a perfect sampler of Murakami’s work does not make it a perfect collection. In fact, its variability nicely reflects Murakami’s career. While all the stories are well-written and worth reading, they vary considerably in strength and impact. While it’s clever, and hints at a powerful story surrounding it, for example, “Samsa In Love” peaks with its opening line: “He woke to discover that he had undergone a metamorphosis and become Gregor Samsa.” Everybody, I assume, likes a good Kafka joke, but the story leads with its punchline.

“Kino,” on the other hand, is Murakami at his best, and worth the price of the book. The story revolves around a small bar owned by the title character, and incorporates noir elements, disturbing sex, a portentous cat, a plague of snakes, a mysterious stranger, jazz, gangsters and a disturbing prophecy to create a surreal nightmare that cuts deeply — though elliptically — to the emotional heart. It’s thought-provoking and powerful, a reminder that, at his best, few contemporary writers rival Murakami.
