What Are We Reading

BOOK 007 | The Home for Unwanted Girls by Joanna Goodman

BASED ON TRUE EVENTS: Emotionally raw and compulsive, THE HOME FOR UNWANTED GIRLS exposes a heartbreaking part of Canadian history. In the 1950s, thousands of Quebec’s orphans were falsely classified as mentally ill and confined to psychiatric institutions because the government paid the Church more money for wards of hospitals. Their education stopped abruptly and the children were lost in a system of abuse and neglect. In this ultimately healing novel, Goodman confronts that past and offers Elodie something that many orphans never had: a chance for truth, happiness, and above all, redemption. Elodie’s character is inspired by actual accounts of orphans that Goodman came across in her research, giving the novel a great emotional depth and acknowledging that Elodie and Maggie’s story is one of many.
