Event description
Bridging The Gap featuring Bad Waitress, Fleece, and Les Shirley – Live At Bridgeworks!

About this event

Bad Waitressantsy art punk revels in fits of fury and ego. It spits in your face and winks, ferocious and playful. The Toronto-based four-piece play like they’re conspiring or casting a spell, each member wielding a different power, howls and erratic drum fills and fiery riffs fueling one another. That improvisation spirit doesn’t stop at their music. Katelyn Molgard, Nicole Cain, Kali-Ann Butala, and Moon finish each other’s sentences. Their conversations flow like free jazz. When asked to describe Bad Waitress’ sound, they agree on one word: conviction. “We play with conviction. There's nothing apologetic about it,” Kateyln says. “Even with our bizarre song structures, we don't hide anything in our music. It's just very...I don't like the word raw, it’s overused, but...raw.” The band fidgets between genres, instead honing a distinct energy. “It's energetic. It's electric,” Moon adds. “It's whatever word that we can think of later that's better than raw.” Nicole suggests, “Honest?” Katelyn jumps in, “Rawnest.” Bad Waitress’ debut full-length album, No Taste, finds strength in mood swings, from upbeat “groovin down the street” songs like “Strawberry Milkshake” to “I'm gonna fucking punch everyone” songs like “Lacerate,” as Nicole puts it. “It’s good to listen to when you're walking alone at night. I get really anxious, but I feel powerful when I listen to this album, like I’m fucking untouchable. It’s basically a self-defense album.”

Fleece was founded on the songwriting and lead vocals of Matt Rogers alongside the perpetual energy of drummer Ethan Soil. After some personnel changes, Megan Ennenberg (guitar/vocals) and Jameson Daniel (guitar) joined the band, fulfilling the missing pieces and completing the band as a cohesive whole. The rebirth of Fleece boasts a brand new record unveiled in August 2021. Stunning and Atrocious explores the complexities of vulnerability, sexuality, love, anxiety, depression, joy, silliness, honesty and power. It delves deep into the duality of human experience: the stunning and the atrocious. Exclaim! hailed the album as "an experimental concoction of psychedelic textures, bedroom pop yearning and arena rock payoffs."

Right off the bat, you may wonder what is a Shirley. A Shirley is a ride or die, a way of life. Raphaëlle Chouinard (Vocals; Guitar),Sarah Dion (Bass), and Lisandre Bourdages (Drums) had too much whisky one night and accidentally unleashed the beast within them to become Les Shirley, a kick-ass rock power trio. Drenched in early 2000s pop culture, their sound is shaped by their punk rock teenage years and the women they became today, karaokeing their nights away to pop anthems. A symphony of raw power chords, raging riffs and wild vocal melodies that is never getting out of your head. From Blink-182 to Céline Dion, their influences are vast and it shows in the craftsmanship of their songs. Formed in early 2018, Les Shirley rapidly made their way into Montreal’s music scene.Their debut EP, released in March 2019, brought them three nominations at GAMIQ and, the band brought home the trophies for Best New Artist and Rock EP Of The Year. Local radio station CHOM picked up their singles and have been spinning them heavily ever since. The girls toured Quebec on many occasions and have shared the stage with acts such as The Beaches, AntiQueens, and Ten Foot Poles. In March 2020, they took part in the first all-female bill forCHOM’s Rock Room. Les Shirley was scheduled to play many festivals set to take place in summer2020 (Festivald’été de Québec, Le Festif, FME). The pandemic didn’t kill their love for rocking out and, the band is ready to burn down whatever comes their way. Forever Is Now, their debut album, came out on March 19, 2021. It is pure energy; a craving to live fully in the present (especially in times like these) and it’s a feeling that builds up from song to song. It’s a collection of sounds that takes roots in dirty punk rock as well as old rock ballads and melodic pop anthems.
