Event description

Description

The Bancroft Institute is hosting a coast-to-coast roundtable discussion about Canada's draft national strategy on Disability and Work. The event will take place in Toronto, but participants can also join by telephone or via webcast.

11:00am to 4:00pm in Toronto (Friends House at 60 Lowther Street)
8:00am to 1:00pm in British Columbia (online or teleconference)
12:30pm to 5:30pm in Newfoundland (online or teleconference)

There is no cost to attend online. There is a suggested $10 donation for those attending in person, to help cover the costs of food, which can be paid online or at the event. The event is free for unwaged participants.

Over the past two years, The Disability and Work in Canada Steering Committee has developed a vision for a pan-Canadian strategy that will help guide efforts to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Canada. Members of the Steering Committee with ties to the injured worker community are interested in hearing responses from the community regarding the strategy, and are inviting interested parties from all over Canada to join the discussion.

The session will begin with an overview of the Strategy and some curated panel discussions, followed by open reflections and comments from participants in the conference. These comments will be recorded to inform the Disability and Work in Canada Steering Committee as they complete their work on the national strategy.

Those who register for online participation and teleconference will recieve a link and telephone number in the week before the event.

Presenters and pannelists include:
Sarah Jama (Organizer, Disability Justice Network of Ontario)
John Rae (Human Rights Advocate; 2nd Vice Chair, Council of Canadians with Disabilities)
Steve Mantis (Chair, Research Action Committee, Ontario Network of Injured Workers’ Groups)
Gordon Kyle (Community Living Ontario)
Chavon Niles (Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants)
