BarnRaise Edmonton 2017
Fri, 17 Mar 2017, 6:00 PM – Sun, 19 Mar 2017, 6:00 PM MDT
Join MADE to improve early childhood development in Edmonton for a poverty-free future.
Started by the Institute of Design in Chicago, BarnRaise Edmonton is a two-day maker conference that brings together community partners, design facilitators, and participants to collaborate and co-create viable solutions to social problems embedded in the community.
Participants will hear from leading experts in the field of design thinking and social innovation and work in interdisciplinary teams of 8-10 people to tackle real-world problems in collaboration with design firms and community organizations.
This year’s BarnRaise challenge is improving early childhood development for a poverty-free future, which aligns with the work of the End Poverty Edmonton Task Force.
HOW IT WORKS
Community partners will pose a design challenge to their workshop team and collaborate with design firms to provide subject-matter expertise and support research initiatives that will become a source of information for innovation.
Design firms lead interdisciplinary teams through a series of design methods to build a human-centered understanding of a design challenge and prototype solutions in collaboration with the community partners.
Participants bring their talents, expertise, and passion to improve the lives of those who live in poverty and learn about design thinking through the application of design methods to co-create human-centered solutions.
Participants: early childhood development providers and educators, parent support providers, non-profit organizations, charities, foundations, public sector and business community, students and academics, designers and non-designers, parents and caregivers, health providers--anyone interested in learning about human-centered design for social innovation by tackling issues related to early childhood development and poverty.
