Barrel Hunter - First Edition Scotch Whisky Tasting
Wed, 26 October 2016, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM MDT
Barrel Hunter's mission is to bring outstanding products to Alberta from small wineries and distilleries all over the world. Sharing these artisan wines and spirits is a real joy, especially when they are from family owned companies.
Lee Hanson is the Importer of some of the finest Scotch Whisky that comes into our market. On October 26th he will walk us through some of the most unique Scotch currently in the provence. First Editions are very limited, single cask, hand selected from some of Scotlands greatest producers.
“As a young company in an industry where time is of the greatest importance, we can afford to be patient.”
The Laing Brothers, Andrew and Scott are the third Laing generation in the whisky biz. Their grandfather started a blending company in the 50's and locked in contracts with 55 distilleries(about half of them). These "grandfathered" contracts give them access to drams that others can't get. They start with the best empty casks they can find, knowing that 70% of the flavour comes from the wood. They then fill the product with new make spirits and leave them on site to age. The started squirreling away casks while in their early twenties and are now reaping the benefits 20 years later.
"Founded in 2010, the origins of the company are rooted in the decades we have spent growing up in and around the Scotch whisky industry, and our respect and passion for the spirit this history has instilled. With a label inspired by the classic elegance of an antique manuscript, the First Editions brand is the mark of quality which appears across our core range of single-cask bottlings of malt whisky. We review our maturing stocks on a monthly basis, drawing samples from casks we believe may be ready for bottling. Always mindful of the benefits of a whisky being from just one cask, we will bottle it when we feel it is at its best for drinking rather than being influenced by “round” ages such as 18, or 25 years old." - Andrew Laing
