Event description

Description

Children with speech and language delays are at risk for having difficulty learning to read. Learn how you can integrate literacy activities into your therapy. These activities are for EVERY child regardless of age and disability. We believe EVERY child can be a reader!

Pam Waterhouse will do a quick presentation of Dr. Enid Wolf-Schein’s Structured Methods in Language Education (SMILE) (2004) program. This is a multisensory program designed to teach children with hearing impairments to speak and read. Enid was recently brought out of retirement by the Autism Community Training group to present in Vancouver as the SMILE program has been successfully used with both verbal and nonverbal students with autism.

Karen Zacharias, M.A., R-SLP, CCC-SLP(C) has successfully used the SMILE Program over the years and built upon it, integrating the work of Wanda Sanseri’s Spell to Read and Write (SWR), to develop her own program called Communication-Link. Karen’s program develops communication skills focusing on sound production, print, receptive and expressive language, grammar and spelling. Karen will show her program to us and then lead us through a make-and-take session so we leave with materials ready to incorporate literacy into our therapy!
