Description

In an official partnership with the Royal Ontario Museum, the Revue Cinema presents a series of three films inspired by It's Alive: Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection.

Introduced by series host Nathalie Atkinson in conversation with Avery Plewes, costume designer of JT LeRoy, Ready or Not and the upcoming remake of The Craft, with an illustrated talk on the visual references and cultural context that shape the influential art direction, set, and costume design of this genre-bending horror masterpiece. This screening complements the Royal Ontario Museum's current exhibition "It's Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection" (on view until January 5, 2020).

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Avery Plewes is a costume designer, illustrator, and creative. She made the transition from fashion to costume design by working as a stylist, buyer, and costume assistant on Canadian-shot projects like Hannibal, Star Trek: Discovery, Molly’s Game, The Umbrella Academy, and Suits. Her lead costume design credits include Jean of the Joneses, Everything, Everything, JT LeRoy and the recent comedy-horror Ready or Not. Based in Toronto, her next project is the Blumhouse reboot of teen witch drama The Craft.

ABOUT DESIGNING THE MOVIES

Created and hosted by journalist Nathalie Atkinson, Designing the Movies is the historic Revue Cinema’s monthly film series that makes art direction, set decoration, costume, and production design the lens for analysis. Each screening features an expert introduction and visual essay.

ABOUT IT'S ALIVE! AT THE THE ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM

Famous guitarist Kirk Hammett, of the heavy metal band Metallica, has created one of the world's most extraordinary collections of classic horror and sci-fi movie posters. This exhibition explores Hammett's significant collection and examines the connection between artistry, emotion, and popular culture through a selection of works from 20th century cinema. "It's Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection" is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts. It is on view at the Royal Ontario Museum until January 5, 2020.

This screening is presented by The Revue Cinema and Designing the Movies, in partnership with the Royal Ontario Museum, with community sponsorship from Damzels.
