Description

BEAT welcomes you to join in on a conversation with Gow Hastings Architects and Valerie Gow.

Valerie Gow co-founded Gow Hastings Architects in 2002 with Partner Philip Hastings after many years of practice as a Project Architect at significant design firms. She graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in interior design and architecture from the University of British Columbia. Valerie is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

In over 25 years of practice Valerie has helped public clients bring their project visions to life in meaningful ways. With a portfolio of over 250 academic projects, she is recognized for her design leadership in creating innovative and interactive learning spaces that have helped Colleges and Universities across Ontario align their facilities with 21st century pedagogy. She and her colleagues at Gow Hastings developed the first interactive culinary teaching lab where students practice their skills in real time with high-powered kitchens and quality teaching restaurants. Valerie also played a key role in the development of a “field-to-fork” concept that drove the design of the new culinary school at Durham College. These projects have been recognized by several OAA Awards of Excellence and ARIDO Awards, along with a number of international design awards.

Active in the local architecture and design communities, Valerie is a founding member of the Harbourfront Architecture Gallery Advisory Committee, the Dean’s Advisory Council at Humber College and the Fanshawe College Interior Design Advisory Committee. She has lectured and critiqued at several architecture schools, including “Instantanes d’architecture” at Université Laval, “AIA Popularize” at Ryerson University and frequently juries design and product competitions worldwide.

Valerie strongly believes in nurturing the development of the next generation of designers and is a passionate advocate for the advancement of women in the design profession. She has participated in the “Women’s Leadership Seminar” for BEAT and has mentored many intern architects and students.

Valerie's commitment to equality and diversity is most evident at Gow Hastings, which boasts one of the best male-female ratio in the industry. Valerie makes a proactive effort to ensure that the office is as diverse and gender balanced as the larger multicultural Canadian context, and of the clients and user groups we serve.

Doors open at 6:15pm for mingling and refreshments. Upon arrival please enter from the Davenport entrance. Grab your tickets early as these are popular events!
