About this event

Beethoven composed his great Missa solemnis (in D major) between 1819 and 1825, around the time of his Ninth Symphony. As one of his crowning achievements, rooted in the longest tradition of sacred music, and set for four soloists, a large chorus and a full orchestra, its glorious music pushes singers and players alike to the limits of their capabilities. It is perhaps for that reason that it is not regularly performed and is not as well known as his symphonies. The occasion of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth seems perfect for the Ottawa Classical Choir and the Société philharmonique du Nouveau-Monde to perform this monumental work for the Ottawa public.
