Event description

Description

Behaviour Change for Sustainable Cities is an Urban Thinkers Campus held in partnership with the United Nations Programme for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat), under the World Urban Campaign. Urban Thinkers Campuses are action-oriented conferences aimed at building effective partnerships for localizing global frameworks, particularly the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.

Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and community members in the Waterloo Region and beyond are invited to attend this free, zero-waste event.

The event comprises two parts: an evening keynote address by Dr. Amelia Clarke on Friday October 19, and a full day of interactive panel discussions on Saturday October 20. See here for the conference programme.

Both the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda call for wide-spread change in human societies, from the individual to the global level. Accordingly, this Urban Thinkers Campus will explore the concept of behaviour change among urban actors. The conference will address the questions: "Whose behaviour(s) must change, and how, to build more sustainable cities?" and "How can we best bring about these behaviour changes?"

To ground discussions, four thematic areas have been chosen: housing, transport systems, disaster risk, and waste. In addition to exploring particular issues requiring behaviour change, participants will learn about tools and strategies for effecting behaviour change, and combine this knowledge to identify solutions.

See the conference Concept Note more information on the theme of 'Behaviour Change for Sustainable Cities'.

This Urban Thinkers Campus is being organized by the Association of Graduate Planners, co-sponsored by the School of Planning, the Faculty of Environment, and SDSN Canada, with the generous support of the Waterloo Environment Students' Endowment Fund (WESEF), and under the auspices of the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth.

The conference organizers are striving to make this a zero waste event. Attendess are asked to help meet this goal by bringing reusable drinking containers to the event, taking public transit to the event if feasible, and taking other actions to help reduce our environmental impact.
