Description:

Launched in 2016, the Behavioural Insights Group addresses public policy challenges that have a behavioural component by drawing on our understanding of psychology and economics. Behavioural Insights recognizes that every encounter a citizen has with government could involve a decision or behaviour. The aim of behavioural insights is to understand, predict, and shift behaviour and decision-making in alignment with government policy, and ultimately achieve better outcomes for citizens, society and the economy.

This presentation will provide an introduction to the cognitive biases that affect decision-making and show how public policy-makers can use this knowledge to shift behaviour in predictable ways. A number of examples will be discussed whereby simple and low-cost “nudges” resulted in positive changes related to taxation, charitable giving, and program uptake.

About the Speaker:

As the Business Lead/Project Director for the Behavioural Insights Group, Ken is responsible for overseeing project teams that work with client ministries to develop behaviourally-informed solutions to their varied policy challenges. He also develops and maintains partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to support the development, implementation and evaluation of behavioural insights projects.

Ken joined the BC Public Service in 2017 after a career in aviation with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the BC Air Ambulance Program. Ken has led a number of challenging projects including overseas helicopter deployments and Air Force support to the RCMP security planning for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
