About Ruby:
Ruby has been belly dancing for over a decade. Her training originated in Alberta under the tutelage of Suzy, and took Ruby to Egypt to study with local masters. She's currently a member of Sacred Centre Dance, under the artistic direction of Nath Keo.

Is it Cultural Appropriation if I participate in your class, and add aspects of this dance form to my repertoire?

In order to answer this question, let’s first define the term and explore the intention of the class:

Cultural Appropriation: the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without permission, and without showing that you understand or respect this culture.

Class intention: To share the beauty of the movements, the healing nature of connection with one's body, and sensuality through dance

The knowledge I have of belly dance comes from my teachers, all having studied with, or having been Egyptian in heritage. In teaching these movements, their intention was for me to share the knowledge forward amongst my community, thus empowering more people around the world. I travelled to Egypt to further understand the culture and nuances of the dance.

It is important to respect and give thanks for the expertise I have gained over the years. During my class sessions, we will collectively acknowledge the source of my teachings, and appreciate their intention to share the movement and knowledge with the greater community.

I will happily maintain an open dialogue, and look further to future discussions. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
