Best Interests of the Child: In Whose Interest?
Thu, 24 November 2016, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST
Katherine Kavassalis, Office of the Children’s Lawyer Legal Director
Professor Shelley Kierstead, Osgoode Hall Law School, and
Cheryl Milne, Asper Centre, University of Toronto
Will be interviewed by Dr. Linda Ennis, Dr. Martha Simmons and Dr. Jennifer Leitch of the Academic & Policy Section, FDRIO.
The discussion will focus on what is in the best interests of a child, and understanding the concept both practically, as well as theoretically, from a legal and psychological perspective. We will define the term “ best interests of the child" and then will refer to legal decisions related to this issue, as well as psychological interpretations of it. We plan to discuss particular scenarios in the hope of clarifying who is benefitting from the decisions related to “best interests” and how to ensure that, in fact, our children's best interests are being taken into account.
