As part of OneAbility's ProMotion Week for accessible physical activity, RIV is hosting this workshop to expand your existing knowledge about disability and the importance of incorporating inclusive values into your programming, but most importantly, into your lives. This is an ideal opportunity for students and professionals in the recreation, fitness, educaiton and health fields.
Three guest speakers will share with you the importance of inclusive values and the impact it has had on their lives.
Faye Cawsey: Faye has a background in community rehabilitation and has proudly worked with RIV since 1990. As a professional supporting people with disabilities as well as growing up with a disability, Faye speaks to the importance of inclusive opportunities and choice.
Chris Bird: Chris found it difficult to return to sport after losing his leg in a motor vehicle accident. Not only was he too self conscious to go to the gym, but he was unaware of the parasports available for participation. Chris now is a member of the men's national sitting volleyball team, and enjoys spending time kayaking where he resides in Nanaimo, BC.
Jeff Scott: Jeff is a self-proclaimed 'natural quadriplegic': "Being disabled came easy to me, I've always been pretty good at sports". Jeff is the cofounder of the non-profit organization 'Live it Love it Foundation' who promote adventure for those with disabilities.
Learn about best practices for inclusion, tips for accommodating different needs and the importance of language. Be prepared to participate in a hands-on gym demonstrations following the lecture portion.
