Description

Join us for a one-day interactive case-based learning experience chaired by Dr. Alysha Ladha, developmental pediatrician, joined by Dr. Peter Rumney, physician director, rehab and complex continuing care and other clinical team members, to discuss best practices in pediatric concussion for primary care providers. This event aims to provide in-depth training for community pediatricians, family physicians and nurse practitioners on supporting children, teens and families with concussion injuries.

This event has been approved by the Canadian Paediatric Society for a maximum of 7.25 credit hours as an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.




Learning Objectives: To increase knowledge, competency and comfort levels for community physicians and nurse practitioners in concussion management for children and youth in the primary care setting.

  1. Identifying primary care role in pediatric concussion, and essential elements in diagnosis, medical assessment, initial recommendations and medical clearance of concussion

  2. Completing initial medical assessment based on clinical history, physical examination and evidence-based use of adjunctive tests for diagnosis, when to refer for emergency assessment. In addition to documentation, letters of concussion diagnosis and resources.

  3. Communicating best-practice recommendations in pediatric concussion management through appropriate language and setting recovery expectations to children, teens and their families.

  4. Using evidence-based methods for return-to-activity decision making, in addition to documentation and letters of concussion medical clearance.

  5. Identifying which children, teens and families are at higher-risk for prolonged recovery, in addition to how and when to make appropriate referrals to multidisciplinary care in the community.

  6. Understanding both acute and persistent concussion symptoms in children/teens and current best-practices amongst multidisciplinary teams in pediatric specific setting
