Description

Ascension's Jazz & Chamber Series 2017-18 presents a concert for Remembrance Day, "Stolen Art Songs," with piano and cello duo Beth Silver & Jenna Richards.

The Program
Featuring works that sit particularly well with the vocal properties of the cello, this program captivates audiences through a series of short vignettes. French composers Faure, Debussy, and Poulenc are contrasted by Rachmaninoff, Dvorak and a splash of Gershwin. The narrative of these songs brings us on a journey of love, loss, and self-discovery.

The Players
Beth Silver is thrilled to be part of a community in which she can thrive on her intuition and creativity. She has performed on stages across Canada, the United States, Europe, Israel and China, as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. A recent graduate of McGill’s Master’s program, she was a student of Matt Haimovitz, with whom she was invited to play as part of his all-cello group Uccello. She recently toured with Uccello to Napa Valley as well as performing in Salzburg for Kammermusik Fest.

Jenna Richards earned ARCT diplomas in piano and violin before completing high school in her native Halifax. Studying piano performance at the University of Toronto, she garnered consecutive Glenn Gould Scholarships, the Fey Hethrington Scholarship, the Lydia Wong scholarship for excelling in instrumental collaboration and many Nova Scotia Talent Trust Scholarships. She has performed at Tuckamore (St. John’s), the Four Seasons Center for the Performing Arts (Toronto), Orford (Quebec), Chamberfest (Ottawa), National Arts Centre (Ottawa), and the TSO’s “Young People’s Concert Series” (Toronto). Currently, Jenna works for the Ottawa Arts Council, Ottawa Chamber Music Society, Ottawa Classical Choir and the Canadian Centennial Choir, and freelances frequently throughout Ontario.
