What does food security look like in 2018? in 2028? In an effort to protect traditional food systems and improve access to affordable, local meat and produce, all sectors of regional economy are experimenting with a wide range of innovative research, asset management and community engagement programs.

Join us in centrally located Smithers, BC where you’ll experience two days packed with learning and networking opportunities with food security leaders from all over Northwest BC!

Some highlights from our program include:

  • Food Security 101 with our keynote speaker Janine de la Salle, one of Canada's leading authorities on food systems planning. Every participant with receive a customized toolkit for Northwest BC.

  • Continuing the conversation from the 2017 Forum with research updates

  • Climate Change and Indigenous Fisheries with Greg Knox, of SkeenaWild

  • The Business Case for Local Food with Ken Shaw, NWCC instructor

  • How to build consensus and set priorities with Janine de la Salle

  • Local speakers presenting on case studies for food security infrastructure (i.e. Bulkley Valley Custom Slaughter), policy (i.e. Backyard Chicken Bylaws and Agricultural Plans), and community education projects (i.e. Local Food to School programs)

  • Options for Handling Power Outages: backup systems and strategy energy systems planning with Kevin Pegg of Energy Alternatives

  • Research, financial and outreach support available through Northern Health Authority

  • Delicious and local food lunch options and tours at social enterprises Grendel Group and iKitchen included with your registration fee for both days

  • Evening networking opportunities including live music, tastings at Bulkley Valley Brewery, and guided tours of some remarkable backyards

This event will launch a new era in collaboration that crosses cultures and jurisdictional boundaries. By the end of the two days we will have a framework for a Regional Food Security Plan with a clear vision and goals identified by participants. Rest assured this will be an action-oriented conference with a focus on making things happen.
