Event description

Aromas, Memory, and Meditation, July 20th 2017, Small Talk Vineyards - $30 per person

We all know how to smell... or so we think. When you're a child you smell and pay attention to everything in detail. But as you grow older, food and other items become less exciting and details are more easily ignored. It's time to rebuild those abilities and learn how to access your hidden scent memories. Almost everyone has the ability to smell and find aromas within wine, and most react to these smells without even knowing it. Spend some time mindfully admiring aromas as we teach you to unlock the power of scent memory! Did you know that smelling the same scent while studying and then taking a test makes you remember more of the studied material?

Winefulness in the Winery, July 27th 2017, Marynissen Estates - $30 per person

As we wrap up our Winefulness 101 series, we bring you into a winery to explain the winemaking process and will further focus on one key element of this process. Focusing in on what a wine can tell you about the winemaker's intentions when making it, we take a look at factors such as oak, ageing, blending, and more. The winemaker's toolbox is infinite, but we'll show you how to find the marks left behind by their tools. We'll culminate the night with a final and in-depth winefulness meditation to set you on your way to building your own practice at home, or further continuing your winefulness education journey with us!

Past Events:

Winefulness 101, June 29th 2017, Pondview Estate Winery - $30 per person

With Winefulness 101 we introduce you to the basics of Wine and Mindfulness. We take you through basic mindful eating, breathing, and body scan meditations, while showing you how to apply these to wine tasting and drinking. Additionally, we teach you how to begin to practice building your forgotten abilities of smell and taste; how to uncover those little scent memories the flit through your mind but that you can never pinpoint. We culminate the evening with our very first Winefulness Meditation.

Winefulness of Taste, July 6th 2017, Palatine Hills Estate Winery - $30 per

One of the most important, yet most forgotten elements of wine enjoyment and life our interaction with taste. Not simply aromas and flavours, but the basic physiological tastes such as sweet, sour, salt, bitter, and some of the more recently discovered tastes like "umami". By understanding how we interact with taste, and how they interact with each other, we can learn a lot about ourselves and the wines we drink. This deeper understanding can help us to find and buy wines we love more often, and aid in finding the thoughts that taste can trigger to make us love or hate a wine. Through this event we will explore tastes on their own, and also within wines, using mindful eating exercises and winefulness meditation.

The Story of a Grape, July 13th 2017, Hinterbrook Winery - $30 per person

One story that is told by wine is that of its climate. Every little tiny change in the vineyard compounds into an entirely unique wine. Weather permitting, we'll spend some tranquil time out in the vineyard exploring the difference that wine growing can make on the wine you drink. We'll finish up with a tranquil winefulness meditation as we approach sunset. Through understanding the vineyard you can share a connection with generations of winemakers and thousands of years of human culture. Did you know that a grape matching Pinot Noir's description has existed since the First Century?

Our philosophy at BeWineful is that each wine has a story; where it was from, when it was made, and the people that made it all contribute to the tale it has to tell. You can learn many things about a culture from the wines they make. Our Winefulness 101 course is designed to teach you how to find that story both in yourself and in the wine you're drinking. Through weekly meditations, teachings, and tastings, you will learn to relax and enjoy the small details in life and in your glass.

Over the span of 5 events we teach the following concepts:

  • What winefulness is.

  • How to perform basic mindfulness meditations

  • How to change your life with mindful eating

  • How to regain your ability to smell

  • How to understand your sense of taste

  • How grapes are grown

  • How wine is made

  • How to build your winefulness practice

  • and much more!

We know everyone lives a hectic life, but everybody can benefit from even the smallest amount of meditation, so we've made our series available as individual seminars or as a full 5-part course. Because we would prefer you take the full course beginning to end, in order for you to gain the most benefit, we offer a discount for those that decide to take part in the full 5-part course.

The following 5 events are taking place across Niagara on the Lake in June and July:

The full series runs Thursdays from June 29th 7 - 9pm and July 6th to July 27th, from 6:30-8:30pm

We look forward to sharing the joys of wine and meditation with you this summer! Please be sure to select the correct ticket for the event(s) you wish to attend.

About your Instructor

BeWineful's courses are developed and taught by Jordan Cowe, CWE. Jordan is a Certified Wine Educator and Sommelier based in the Niagara Region of Ontario. Jordan developed his passions for both Wine and Meditation from a young age and has kept pushing forward ever since. In 2015, Jordan became the world's youngest Certified Wine Educator, one of approximately 400 certified worldwide since its creation in 1977. He also earned that year's Banfi Vitners Award for the highest score on the exam. Jordan has been meditating for almost 10 years, discovering it initially through a yoga class. Upon developing panic disorder, he became very interested in the success of Mindfulness meditation in treating anxiety. In the 7 years since that time he has practiced Mindfulness and has used Mindfulness practice to help overcome and manage his struggles with Panic and Agoraphobia. He created the idea of winefulness when he began to have a resurgence of panic attacks while first working in the wine industry. Noticing the similarities between Mindful eating meditations and wine tasting, he created winefulness as a way of incorporating meditation into his work life. He has since developed it into a method for improving blind tasting abilities, and most recently has begun teaching it to the public as a more tangible method of accessing the joys and benefits of meditation (and wine).
