NO RIDE WEDNESDAY, JULY 11. WE'RE OFF TO THE RACES - SEE YOU THERE!

Join BICICLETTA and PENDER RACING p/b BICICLETTA (PRB) every Wednesday night throughout the summer for a leisurely community ride around Stanley Park. This is a social ride where all levels of experience are welcome!

When you arrive, please check in with our ride leader Nic Tickner, who will be wearing a red PENDER jersey. Please introduce yourself so Nic can confirm your arrival and check you in.

The group meets at the Information Booth in Stanley Park at 6:15 pm, allowing enough time to get everyone checked in and groups organized. Ride groups will start leaving the parking lot at 6:30 pm sharp.

***Optional meeting point at Bicicletta West Van (1437 Clyde Avenue), departing at 6:00 pm. Come early and enjoy an espresso shot on us.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: Are there any costs to joining the ride?

A: Nope! It's our way of building a community. However, we do need a liability waiver signed as part of your registration, along with emergency contact information, which is included when you sign up with Eventbrite. You'll need to register for this each week.

Q: Can I take any bike on the ride?

A: Road bikes only, please. No mountain bikes, hybrids, track or TT bikes.

Q: I've never been in a group ride before, can I still join?

A: Absolutely. Please let us know if you haven't been a part of a group ride before - we'll be happy to give you some pointers.

GROUP RIDING 101

- When we ride as a group, certain etiquette needs to be observed to ensure the ride is both safe and enjoyable. While the ride has an open invitation, we may ask riders to leave if they are persistent in riding in an unsafe way.

- Stopping at a stop sign is done as a group, not individually. Consider the riders behind you before you sprint through a yellow light.

- Riding in an erratic manner is dangerous. When the group is tight every rider should try to maintain as straight of a line as possible. Care should be taken in the corners to avoid crossing over the line of another rider.

- Whenever possible, the group should ride in double file and stay in that formation especially when stopping at a stop sign. Please avoid clumping up in a large group at a stop sign.

- Hand Signals. Riders in a group, even in a race situation, will use hand signals to warn riders behind them of obstacles, of slowing or stopping, or train tracks. Some common hand signals: An open hand on the back, signaling a slow or stop. Horizontal slashing motion indicates train tracks. A pointed finger indicates the direction of an obstacle or pothole. Verbal signals and cues are useful as well. Please communicate and share the road with others.

- When the road is flat and the lane is wide, the pace may pick up. Riders should not half wheel or overlap tires. While it is a personal choice how close one wants to get to the wheel in front of you, an effort should be made to ride two abreast so that both riders' handlebars are approximately even. This prevents the formation of gaps that compromise the ability of the group to shield its riders from the wind.

- Hills: On a no drop ride, always wait or slow down at the top of a hill to let slower riders catch back on.

- Maintain your line and your speed; minimize swerves, surges, and slamming on your brakes; be predictable; communicate with your hand and voice, calmly but firmly.

- If you have a mechanical (that isn't catastrophic), raise your hand, call out "mechanical," and as smoothly as possible pull off to either the left (if you're on the left in a double pace line) or the right (if you're on the right).

- If you're riding up front, anticipate causes of accidents; look ahead for obstacles, cars, people, etc. Where there are obstacles ahead, smoothly and subtly change the course so that you and those behind you avoid them. Don't maintain your course and then swerve at the last moment.
