As data-sharing and open government initiatives emerge, many municipal governments have assumed the fundamental role of data administrators in their communities. As the impetus grows so do the challenges and opportunities related to developing a collaborative framework among government departments, community groups and non-profit organizations. The ‘Big Data in Cities: Barriers and Benefits” symposium is designed to leverage sectorial expertise related to the development of practice and policy guideline documents that will help shape current and future data-sharing practices. Guest speakers will present their experience on diverse topics surrounding data-sharing and open government initiatives.

Topics and discussions include:

- Data-sharing strategies

- Privacy-considerate and ethical data collection

- Inter-organizational barriers

- Data operationalization

- Developing multi-agency data-sharing agreements

The event is free and open to non-profit sector, community leaders, social service providers, municipal administrators, academic practitioners, post-secondary students and others interested in “big data” initiatively.
