Course Description:

This three-day course is designed for physical, occupational, speech therapists, osteopaths and assistants treating pediatric clients (birth to 3 years) who demonstrate neurological deficits or suspected deficits. Typical and atypical development will be reviewed as they relate to one another and how the infant/toddler develops functional movement behaviors. Contemporary philosophy and neuro-scientific principles of the Neuro-Developmental Treatment approach will be presented as it relates to treatment of the infant and toddler. Observation of infant movement will reinforce typical development. Movement labs will be used to facilitate one another through movement transitions and to learn handling techniques on an infant-sized doll. Observation of assessment and treatment sessions will demonstrate treatment and handling techniques on an infant. Clothing that allows the therapist to move in lab are strongly suggested and the participants must bring an infant-sized doll for practicing treatment strategies

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the Neuro-Scientific Basis of the Contemporary NDT Practice ModelTM

2. Apply the ICF model as it relates to infant/toddler assessment and treatment via video and observation of assessment and treatment demonstrations.

3. identify at least 10 aspects of typical development via slides and video.

4. identify at least 10 aspects of atypical development as compared to typical development via slides and video.

5. facilitate movement transitions appropriate for the infant/toddler population on another adult and on a doll in lab.

6. promote carry-over and participation in the home and community environments via daily activities.

Jane Styer-Acevedo, PT, DPT, C/NDT maintains a clinical practice, treating individuals through the lifespan with neurological challenges. She is a master clinician in the areas of pediatrics, neurology, and therapeutic aquatics and has been teaching continuing education workshops, nationally and internationally since 1983. Jane’s scope of teaching includes aquatic and “land-based” courses in Australia, Europe, Asia, India, Africa, and North, Central, and South America. She is currently Chair of the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (NDTA) Instructor Group and an Active Pediatric Coordinator Instructor for the NDTA, teaching continuing education courses of varying lengths related to the NDT Practice Model. Jane excels in the problem-based approach to promoting functional shifts for an individual through therapeutic intervention from the acute phase, through rehabilitation, and community entry or re-entry towards life long participation, health and fitness.
