Combining theoretical and practical skills, this workshop aims to familiarize participants with the idea of radio as a medium for making art. This hands-on course will attempt to define radio art by following a downloadable zine called, “Radio Art: Electromagnetic Field Notes” written and designed by the instructor, Martín Rodríguez. The zine is an inspirational guide to the diverse artistic practices that utilize radio, providing visual examples, links and written text from radio artists.

In addition to the material covered in the zine participants will discover and experiment with different types of radio signals and learn how to set up and start broadcasting their own virtual and analog “pirate” radio station. The workshop's main focus is to provide the knowledge necessary to facilitate participants in actualizing their own radio art project. At the end of the workshop, some projects will be selected to be featured on Eastern Bloc’s PirateBlocRadio.

Martín Rodríguez is a multidisciplinary artist, and instigator. His work draws connections between the intrinsic communications in sound to create experiences that engage in the present. His performances, installations, and interventions utilize unconventional techniques to expose the rhythms, harmonies, and melodies found in the cracks of the radio spectrum. Notably, Rodríguez’s work has been presented by the Musée d’art contemporain Montréal, MUAC (CDMX), Darling Foundry, Spektrum (Berlin), as well as various performances across Canada and the US.

In addition to producing his own work, Rodriguez has organised and curated various events, happenings, and festivals. Including Acoustic Mirror, a streaming concert and experimental broadcast series as well as the international digital art festival Sight and Sound Festival, Ibrida*Pluri A/V Festival, and PirateBlocRadio In-Situ. From 2014 to 2018, Rodriguez worked as Technical Director, Lab Director, and Co-director of Eastern Bloc, an artist-run centre dedicated to presenting emerging media artists in Montréal, Canada.

Refund and Cancellation

All workshop registrations are final and no refunds are possible. Eastern Bloc reserves the right to cancel the workshop if the minimum number of participants is not reached. In this case only, the training will be refunded.

In case this workshop was originaly scheduled in person and can not take place in the context of the pandemic, it will be adapted to an online format without refund.

Combinant des compétences théoriques et pratiques, cet atelier en ligne vise à familiariser les participant.e.s avec l'idée de la radio comme médium artistique. Les participant.e.s tenteront de définir l'art radiophonique en suivant un zine téléchargeable intitulé “Radio Art : Notes sur les champs électromagnétiques" écrit et conçu par l'instructeur, Martín Rodríguez. A la fin de l’atelier, certains des projets seront sélectionnés pour être diffusés sur la radio d’Eastern Bloc, “PirateBlocRadio”.

Martin Rodriguez est un artiste multidisciplinaire, et instigateur. Son travail établit des liens entre les communications intrinsèques du son afin de créer des expériences qui s'engagent dans le présent. Ses performances, installations et interventions utilisent des techniques non conventionnelles pour exposer les rythmes, les harmonies et les mélodies qui se trouvent dans les fissures du spectre radioélectrique. Le travail de Rodríguez a notamment été présenté par le Musée d'art contemporain Montréal, au MUAC (CDMX), à la Fonderie Darling, au Spektrum (Berlin), ainsi que dans diverses performances au Canada et aux États-Unis.

En plus de produire son propre travail, Rodriguez a organisé et dirigé divers événements, happenings et festivals. Parmi ceux-ci, citons Acoustic Mirror, un concert en streaming et une série de diffusions expérimentales, ainsi que le festival international d'art numérique Sight and Sound Festival, le festival A/V Ibrida*Pluri et PirateBlocRadio In-Situ. De 2014 à 2018, Rodriguez a travaillé comme directeur technique, directeur de laboratoire et co-directeur d'Eastern Bloc, un centre d'artistes dédié à la présentation d'artistes des émergents à Montréal, au Canada.

Toute inscription à l'atelier est définitive et aucun remboursement n'est possible. Eastern Bloc se réserve le droit d’annuler l’atelier si le nombre minimum de participant.e.s n’est pas atteint. Dans ce cas uniquement, la formation sera remboursée. Dans le cas ou la formation serait prévue en presentiel mais ne pourrais pas avoir lieu en personne dans le contexte de la pandémie, elle sera donnée en ligne sans possibilité de remboursement.
