On May 11, 2017, Young Professionals in Energy will be hosting a YPE & UofA MBA Joint Event: Investing in Alternative Energy by Dr. Peter Flynn. Dr. Flynn is currently the Board Director at Alberta Energy Regulator and has held a wide variety of board positions on non-profit government and for profit boards including Epcor, the Capital Region Housing Corporation, Fort Edmonton Foundation, Plutonic Power Corporation, and the Balancing Pool of Alberta. 

Dr. Peter Flynn will be presenting on Biomass Energy, the science behind it as well as the commercialization of the new technology.

The event is sponsored by U of A MBA's Natural Resources, Energy and Environment (NREE) department. The program executive director, Carmen Velasquez, will talk about the NREE specialization and the core NREE courses. Carmen will also talk about her favourite course, Energy Trading, and recount her early days in her career as a energy trader for a multinational energy company.

Fee: 15 dollars for 2 tickets. Free for U of A students.

Dr. Peter Flynn Bio:

Dr. Peter Flynn has held a series of technical, management, and executive roles in Canada’s energy industry over 25 years. He’s served as the president of CNG Fuel Systems and Corod Industries Inc. In 1999, he returned to the University of Alberta to hold the Poole Chair in Management for Engineers - a prime responsibility was to rebuild the Engineering Management program in the Faculty of Engineering. At the undergraduate level, this included upgrading the teaching of financial information to engineers, developing a course that included financial statement analysis with traditional investment analysis (engineering economics). At the graduate level, this included developing M. Eng., M. Sc. and Ph. D. programs in Engineering Management with over 20 graduate level courses.

 

Dr. Peter Flynn is currently the Board Director at Alberta Energy Regulator and has held a wide variety of board positions on non-profit government and for profit boards including Epcor, the Capital Region Housing Corporation, Fort Edmonton Foundation, Plutonic Power Corporation, and the Balancing Pool of Alberta. Peter is a professional engineer, and he received the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta Summit Award for Community Service in 2009 - primarily in recognition of his work with Fort Edmonton Park and the Capital Region Housing Corporation, a provider of low-income housing.

 

Alberta School of Business Energy Programs Executive Director, Carmen Velasquez:

 

 

Carmen Velasquez, Executive Director, Energy Programs, is with the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta. Her role includes co-leading the Centre for Research in Energy and the Environment, teaching, and developing new programs related to the Business School’s Natural Resources, Energy and Environment focus area.

 

Ms. Velasquez has worked in the energy industry for over fifteen years. Her expertise covers fundamentals modeling and research across the energy spectrum of oil, natural gas, and power and throughout diverse geographical markets. Prior to joining U of A, she was a Director of Crude Oil Markets for IHS Energy, based in Edmonton, where she was responsible for the development of short and medium term market views related to Canadian energy markets. Before IHS, she was Head of Market Analytics for BP in Asia, based in Singapore, where she was responsible for creating analytics models to support short-term trading research, including refined product price outlooks. Ms. Velasquez also has experience in US and Canadian natural gas and power markets and previously held positions with BP and TransCanada in Houston and Calgary. She holds a BComm from the University of Calgary.
