Gail Johnson is the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
In September 2019, Gail Johnson became the RCMP's CHRO, responsible for all matters related to the recruitment, learning & development, staffing, classification, promotion, labour relations, well-being, safety and compensation of RCMP employees, in addition to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion. The CHRO's leadership is fundamental to many of the organization's ongoing modernization initiatives.
Previous to joining the RCMP, Gail served as Assistant Deputy Minister, most recently in charge of the Human Resources Services Branch and prior to that the Learning Branch at Employment and Social Development Canada. Gail has worked in a number of other federal government departments as well, such as National Defence, Canada Revenue Agency, Canada Border Services Agency, and Health Canada in various capacities, including communications, program operations, corporate planning, research and evaluation.
Before she joined the federal public service, Gail spent a decade working for the Ottawa Police Service as the Director of Corporate Planning, where she co-led the amalgamation of Ottawa-Carleton's police services. Gail’s first professional role was as lecturer at Concordia University.
She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education with a specialization in Organizational Behaviour from Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Public Administration degree from Queens University, as well as Master of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Gail is married with one daughter.
