Event description

Description

Black Wellness is a collective experience and is the optimal mental and physical state of well being for all Black people.

Health for most Black Canadians is uniquely affected by many factors. Economy, environment, anti-black racism, systemic discrimination, marginalization, lack of access and lack of culturally appropriate resources are all major determinants of good health. In recognition of The International Decade for People of African Decent (2015-2024), The Black Wellness Weekend is a revolutionary event series where a community will come together in a safe space to share stories, ideas, support and is taking action towards building better health, wellness and life expectancy for its members.

The event will feature Damien McSwine, athlete, author, documentary filmmaker and wellness mogul. The Canadian premiere of his latest masterpiece, Full Body Detox: The Movie details the purpose, meaning and benefits of detoxification for the entire body. Damien is the owner of Powered by Nature Herbs specializing in quality, bio-available supplemental plant nutrition.

The event will take place over the course of two days. The film premiere and lecture by Damien McSwine will be on Saturday, February 23, 2019. We will continue on Sunday, February 24 with a showcase of vendors, workshops, demonstrations and The Black Wellness Cafe spanning the spectrum of holistic medicines, foods, herbs and practices dealing with the body, mind and soul. Our colletion of vendors are experts in all areas of wellness including exercise, food, water, mental health, finance, education, holistic practices and philosophies based in the traditions of the African Diaspora for the entire family and community.

Lori Beazer and Giselle Wilson are the organizers of The Black Wellness Weekend. Lori is the founder of the Afro-Caribbean Farmers Market and The Afro-Indigenous Food Security Festival. Giselle created The Empress Walk, an organization supporting the health of women of colour and culture in Canada. Together, their passion for community health has come to fruition through this event series.

Don't miss the opportunity to access culturally-appropriate resources and vendors that can help get your mind, body and soul back on track! Take part in this landmark Annual Black History Event!

A family friendly event. 16 and under free admission (ID may be required).
