Description

Are you a Black Woman in Toronto wanting to meet new people and create new networks?

Black Women Connect! Book Club is a Toronto-based book and social club that focuses on celebrating Black Literature, Sisterhood and the love of reading. Our mission is to bring Black Women together who love to read fiction and nonfiction books written by writers of African descent for meaningful conversations, connections and socialization. Each month we choose a book and use it as the foundation to discuss our own lives as black women – we, read, discuss, listen, reflect, renew, and yes, drink & eat! BWC purpose is to inform, empower, inspire, and enrich each member's life through the privilege of reading and connecting with each other.

Black Women Connect is for Black Women in Toronto who are looking to make new friends and connect. In addition to our core book club, other activities include special members only brunches, thematic events, retreats, drinks and dinners and other social engagement.

June Book Club Selection: Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi

BOY Novak turns twenty and decides to try for a brand-new life. Flax Hill, Massachusetts, isn’t exactly a welcoming town, but it does have the virtue of being the last stop on the bus route she took from New York. Flax Hill is also the hometown of Arturo Whitman –- craftsman, widower, and father of Snow. SNOW is mild-mannered, radiant and deeply cherished –- exactly the sort of little girl Boy never was, and Boy is utterly beguiled by her. If Snow displays a certain inscrutability at times, that’s simply a characteristic she shares with her father, harmless until Boy gives birth to Snow’s sister, Bird. When BIRD is born Boy is forced to re-evaluate the image Arturo’s family have presented to her, and Boy, Snow and Bird are broken apart. Sparkling with wit and vibrancy, Boy, Snow, Bird is a deeply moving novel about three women and the strange connection between them. It confirms Helen Oyeyemi’s place as one of the most original and dynamic literary voices of her generatio
