Event description

Description

Try your hand at the age old art of block printing.

Carve your own design, ink it and make prints of your artwork. All in three hours.

You will start with the basics of how to use Lino cutter handles and various nibs, to learn proper carving techniques. Then in the last hour you will set-up a printing station, mix ink and make ink slabs. You will experiment with various colour gradients, using brayers, inking the blocks and printing with barons.

By the end of the workshop you will have some beautiful art to share and the knowledge to do it again and again. :)

Block Printing has been around for thousands of years. There are many different techniques, but it is essentially using a carved material covered in ink to transfer an image on to paper or fabric. Block printing can be done with wood, linoleum, rubber, or many other materials, but we will use linoleum for this workshop.

Amy Gaulin • Instructor Bio

Amy is a multidisciplinary artist, specializing in realistic portraits. Trained as a printmaker, and previously employed as a sculptor, Amy has also facilitated many public workshops in bookmaking, printmaking, and art therapy. Though she has ambition in many fields, her focus lies within using soft marks, subtle details, and muted colours through painting to vivify fading photographs and give permanence to disappearing memories. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with distinction from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2012, and most recently is the recipient of the 2015 ACAD Alumni Legacy Award.
