Are you interested in learning about co-creating innovative solutions to water challenges?

Kat Kavanagh (Founder of Water Rangers), Melissa Dick (Toronto and Region Conservation Authority) and Marina Steffensen (Policy Analyst with Environment and Climate Change Canada) recently participated in Waterlution’s Water Innovation Lab Canada, where more than 50 young water leaders were brought together to problem solve and co-invent solutions for local and global pressing water and industry challenges. Blue Drinks Ottawa is pleased to have these three presenters speak to us about their experience at Waterlution and about their innovative projects that they will be prototyping over the next year.

Come join us for these presentations, drinks, and networking with fellow water professionals and aficionados

Bios:

Kat Kavanagh – Kat is a passionate environmentalist who believes in the power of technology to transform our relationship with water. For over 10 years, Kat has designed and built apps, websites and games through her company, Capra Design Limited. Her favourite projects create immersive, joyful experiences that combine game design mechanics with learning, specifically in mental wellness and the environment. Kat’s magic comes from her enthusiasm and ability to take on any challenge. As founder of Water Rangers, Kat does everything from project management, fundraising, social media, public speaking, training, test kit prototyping, testing, UX design, web design and build. Kat conceived and lead a team to build the first version of Water Rangers, which won the Aquahacking competition in 2015. Since then, Water Rangers has also won the GLOS Data Challenge (2016), the Friends of the Tay Watershed Award for Water Resources (2017) and the WatersNext: Early Adopter Award (2018).

Melissa Dick – Melissa is a recent transplant to Toronto, a Québecoise at heart, and a West Coaster in spirit. She grew up in Gatineau, QC, and her passion for aquatic research and fisheries conservation has brought her to freshwater and marine ecosystems across Canada and internationally. While completing her graduate studies at Carleton University, she studied water quality in lakes in Gatineau Park, the effects of tagging on migrating adult Pacific salmon in the Fraser River watershed, and how multiple disciplinary approaches are needed to solve today’s conservation problems. She is the Coordinator of Community Engagement in the Don River and Highland Creek watersheds with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

Marina Steffensen – Marina was born in Vancouver and spent her formative years in Ontario. No matter where she was living, Marina has always been passionate about freshwater and marine issues. She is very interested in helping bridge the gap between scientific expertise and policy, making connections, educating, communicating and facilitating solutions. Marina has a Bachelor of Science (environmental science, minor in biology) from Carleton University, and a Master of Resource Management degree from Simon Fraser University. Currently, Marina is a policy analyst at Environment and Climate Change Canada, working specifically on water policy development. In her spare time, Marina likes to travel and explore new places, and is an avid runner, photographer and scuba diver.
