Event description
Join the boatbuilding youth camp and build your own 12′ canoe.

About this event

Ticket sales start June 2 at 12pm.

Join the boatbuilding youth camp and build your own 12′ canoe, while learning employable skills and gaining a vehicle for healthy and environmentally friendly recreation.

We have space for 6 youth participants aged 13-18. This camp happens from Aug. 16-20 from 8:45am to 3:15pm each day.

Each participant gets to build their own canoe. You will work with quality materials and instructors to learn skills that are transferable to all types of trades. This project includes traditional woodworking skills, three-dimensional shaping of wood, working with a variety of materials beyond wood, as well as surface finishing.

The instructors are both local Yukon residents who are well connected in trades, arts and education and are more than welcome to share opportunities and contacts and act as a reference to participants.

  • This camp requires the physical fitness to operate hand and power tools. Participants should have a keen interest in woodworking. Safety training will be provided and no previous knowledge is required.
  • This camp is hands-on and mostly outside. Appropriate gear and clothes that can get dirty, as well as closed toed shoes are required.
  • Many tasks require more than two hands, so teamwork will be fostered. Participants will be encouraged to take leadership over their project while asking for help and working with others to succeed.

Maximum 6 participants | Cancellation & Refund Policy

Your instructors:

Ulrich completed a 4-year apprenticeship in boatbuilding in Switzerland and worked in a professional boat production setting for 5.5 years as well as traditional carpentry here in the Yukon. He works independently in carpentry and custom manufacturing. At Yukonstruct, he has been teaching many workshops for youth.

Michel is a multitalented tradesperson and artist. Besides working on a variety of projects from snow carving to housing construction, he has a long history in teaching woodworking for youth both at Yukonstruct and local schools.

Both instructors are passionate about teaching youth new skills and showing them what they can accomplish with their own hands.
