Following the launch of Bob Willard's 2nd Edition of the Sustainability ROI Workbook this month, The Roots Collaborative (TRC) is pleased to present Bob leading a hands-on workshop exploring this innovative and comprehensive business case tool.

The Sustainability ROI Workbook is a free, open-source, downloadable Excel workbook. This Master Class will give professionals interested in sustainability and CSR a first-hand introduction into how to use it to build a compelling business case for their organizations’ sustainability projects and initiatives.

Who Should Attend

  • Company staff seeking to build solid business cases to sell their sustainability initiatives to management.

  • Sustainability professionals and consultants who can use the tool to present a strong business case for sustainability to their clients and effectively promote their services.

  • Business managers who lack detailed knowledge of sustainability but need to implement related company directives and proposals.

  • Recent graduates from environmental engineering/management or sustainability programs who are looking for tools to enhance their marketability.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why there is an urgent need for action on environmental and social and issues.

  • Describe the three justifications for a more sustainable economy and a more sustainable company.

  • Explain why we need a more compelling business case for sustainability initiatives.

  • With guidance from built-in instructions and accompanying help videos, use the new, free, open-source Sustainability ROI Workbook to develop a comprehensive and compelling cost-benefit analysis of any sustainability proposal.

  • Respect the “Human Factor” during the business case process.

  • Explain how the Sustainability ROI Workbook is a 7-tool “Swiss Army Knife” for sustainability professionals.



9 AM – noon: Context, Overview and Demo

  • Introductions

  • The need for a better sustainability business case

  • 3 justifications – at the global economy level

  • 3 justifications – at a company level

  • More comprehensive business case framework

  • Five categories of initiatives

  • Demo of how to use the ROI Workbook

  • How the ROI Workbook is a “Swiss Army Knife” tool

  • Close of the morning

Noon – 1 PM:  Lunch provided

1 PM – 4:30 PM: Hands-On Practice

Participants learn how to use the workbook to build a business case using a sample initiative


  • Choose the sample initiative of most interest

  • Draft the business case, with help from built-in instructions and guidance from in-room facilitators

  • Lessons learned from the experience working with the ROI Workbook

  • Closing thoughts 


All slides and handouts will be made freely available to participants for their use.


About Bob Willard

Bob is a leading expert on quantifying the business value of sustainability strategies. He has given over a thousand presentations, has authored six books, and provides extensive resources for sustainability champions. He serves on the boards of Forum for the Future U.S. and the Future-Fit Foundation. He was one of the first five inductees into the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) Hall of Fame in 2011 and received a Clean50 award in 2015. He is an award-winning certified B Corp, an ISSP Certified Sustainability Professional, and has a PhD in sustainability from the University of Toronto.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Paid public parking at Daniels Spectrum is available in a lot located underneath the building. The vehicle entrance is located at the rear of the building, accessed via Sackville Street on the western side of the building. Parking is $10.00 for 8 hours and can be paid by cash or credit card.

What can I bring into the event?

Please bring your laptop.  Before attending:

  • Download and browse the Sustainability Roi Workbook and the “HelpVideosExample” from the Sustainability ROI Workbook webpage, and bring them on your laptops

  • Bring laptop earphones for the afternoon workshop, in case you want to listen to one or more help videos as you work individually on drafting a business case.

  • Those wishing to use a real initiative in the afternoon workshop should bring a description of it with them.
