The book documents the experiences and hardships of marginalized women’s organizations that united to demand gender justice during and in the aftermath of Colombia’s armed conflict. It explains the gendered underpinnings of why women engage in feminist mobilization, even when this exposes them to high levels of risk. Dr. Zulver follows four organizations that break traditional gender norms and defy armed groups’ who seek social and territorial control, and provides enriching evidence on how women can surmount the barriers to mobilization when they come together and frame their actions in terms of resistance rather than fear.

Dr. Zulver will speak about the research and advocacy work involved in creating the book, the current Colombian context that brought a Black woman with a trajectory of social activism to the Vice Presidency, and the policy recommendations that emerge from her research. To finish, she will explore the opportunities and challenges of building gendered peace in a country struggling to move beyond its history of armed conflict.
