Book Launch: Wherever I Find Myself: Stories by Canadian Immigrant Women
Tue, 4 April 2017, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM PDT
In their own words, Wherever I Find Myself holds the diverse and personal stories by authors of all types of ethnicities and intersecting identities. Come join us for the Vancouver launch on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 7 PM in the Vancouver Public Library's Alice MacKay Room.
A yellow dress with ruffles, a kind Grade 1 teacher with a last name difficult to spell, cockroaches in the bathroom — these are portraits of cultural misunderstandings, bureaucratic hurdles, attempts to navigate unfamiliar landscapes, and a desire to be accepted despite differences in accent, sexuality, skin colour, or taste in food. Whether home is a place they long to return, desire to create, or hope to preserve in the language of their families, each writer reveals how pieces of their history have brought them closer or farther to the feeling of belonging.
Within these pages, the authors are both critical and grateful for being able to call Canada home. Together their stories present a mosaic of emotions and worldviews that underline the plurality of immigrant experiences for women.
Readers: Sarah Munawar, Jianna Faner, NikNaz K., Esmeralda Cabral, Onjana Yawnghwe, Jasmine Sealy, Abeer Yusuf, Gina Roitman, and editor Miriam Matejova
Please note: This event is free and open to the public. We want to especially invite families new to Canada and/or Vancouver. We've partnered up with the VPL and volunteer support to offer free child-minding and storytime, available in the room next door.
Copies of Wherever I Find Myself will be available for sale (optional).
We want to especially express our gratitude and support to the Quebec Writers’ Federation as well as the ISS of BC and the Vancouver Public Library. Also, rabble.ca, one of Canada's success stories in independent media, is proud to sponsor the event and we thank them for drawing attention to our local stories and storytellers.
