Take a look at the tournament manual here: March Tournament Manual

Team Registration:

A team consists of 4-5 students (Grade 4 - 8) and is led by an adult Captain! During the tournament, every team will have an opportunity to participate in the challenge while a panel of judges evaluates every team. Teams should prepare their robots in advance to complete the challenge! Pizza and refreshments will be provided for the teams during the tournament.

Prizes:

  • First team: $100.00 (five $20 gift cards)

  • Second team: $50 (four $10 gift cards)

The challenge:You’re On Thin Ice!

The story:

Your team is a part of the newest expedition to the North Pole to research the effects of global warming on Arctic Foxes. Unfortunately, your robot rover has gotten stuck on an iceberg, and it is your team’s job to make sure it gets back to the Arctic Research Station safely! Make sure to keep your rover on the ice floes while hiding from polar bears and avoiding icicles!

The challenge:

Teams must build a robot rover and safely get it from one side of the course to the other. Students may use LEGO EV3, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi to program their robot. Teams start with 30 points and have 10 minutes to navigate the course. During the challenge, the various actions the robot makes will add or deduct points from the team. See the Scoring System section below. The team with the highest remaining score by the end of their challenge attempt wins. If no team can reach the Arctic Research Station, the team that got the farthest will win. For full challenge details, please see the tournament manual.

Scoring System:

You start the challenge with 30 points, and then your team will lose or earn points when:
Every 2 minutes elapsed = -1
Touching a polar bear = -2
Touching an icicle = -2

Moving part touches the water = -1 (max -3)
Going off the course = -3
NO human interaction = +5
Reached the finish = +3

Course Dimension
