Event description
Learn techniques, benefits and pitfalls of boulevard gardening in accordance with the City of Victoria's boulevard garden guidelines

About this Event

In early 2016, Mayor and Council unanimously approved Boulevard Gardening Guidelines for the City of Victoria, officially permitting property owners to garden on the boulevards immediately adjacent to their lots. Tenants and other eager diggers are also permitted to garden street-side, with the informed consent of the adjacent property owner.

In this workshop, learn the basic techniques, benefits and pitfalls associated with boulevard gardening, with close consideration given to the Guidelines themselves. Also learn about the Compost Education Centre’s match-making service, which aims to put eager gardeners looking for boulevard plots in touch with property owners looking for boulevard gardeners. This workshop is part botanical, part social. Let’s bring new meaning to the “City of Gardens”!

Instructor Bio:

Michael Large is a local lawyer and boulevard gardener. In 2014, he played the lead role in developing the Boulevard Gardening Guidelines for the City of Victoria on a volunteer basis, with input from local gardeners, community groups, and City Councillors. Michael co-founded and maintains the Fair Field, a boulevard garden near Fairfield and Cook, and administers Street Greens, a website dedicated to boulevard gardening in Victoria

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website.
