Event description

Description

In February, 2016, Victoria’s City Council unanimously approved “Boulevard Gardening Guidelines”,[1] officially permitting property owners (and their helpers) to garden on the boulevards adjacent to their properties. Tenants and condo dwellers are also permitted to garden on the boulevard, with the informed consent of the adjacent property owner. In this workshop, learn the basic techniques, benefits and pitfalls associated with boulevard gardening, with close consideration given to the Boulevard Gardening Guidelines themselves. Also learn about the Compost Education Centre’s match-making service, which aims to put eager gardeners looking for boulevard plots in touch with property owners looking for boulevard gardeners. This workshop is part botanical, part social. Let’s bring new meaning to the “City of Gardens”!

Michael Large is a local lawyer and boulevard gardener, who played a leading role in developing the Boulevard Gardening Guidelines for the City of Victoria, on a volunteer basis. Michael founded a boulevard gardening website called www.streetgreens.com; co-founded "The Fair Field" (a boulevard garden on Fairfield Road, near Cook St); and helps maintain two boulevard gardens in front of other people’s homes (one in Fairfield, one in Fernwood).
