About this event
Breaking News: Journalism in the Digital Ecosystem
With the growth of digital media as the major method of publishing, accessing, generating, and preserving news, the environment for journalists and news organizations has undergone substantial changes and presented new problems. Despite these changes, the fundamental concepts of journalism have essentially remained the same. This creates tremendous possibilities for innovation in the sector. As digital media continues to advance, a greater number of possible breakthroughs are emerging inside its sphere of influence. Narratives, platforms, and business models are constantly being tested, but the needs of communities remain steadfast. Journalism may serve as the foundation for unanticipated innovations that enhance the manner in which individuals receive news in a climate of constant change. The evidence indicates that this favourable result is attainable.
Luca De Biase is a journalist and writer at the Italian financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, La Svolta and Oecd-Forum, and an adjunct professor of Knowledge Management at the University of Pisa and Digital Citizenship at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He is also the Director of the Media Ecology Research Network at Reimagine Europa in Brussels, co-curator of the Politecnico di Torino's Biennale Tecnologia, and a member of the European Commission's Mission Assembly for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities.
This event is presented by the St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto, in conjunction with the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Journalism, and the McLuhan Foundation.
The event is free and open to the public. You are encouraged to register online.

About the organizer
The BOOK AND MEDIA STUDIES program at St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto is an interdisciplinary and historical investigation of the role of printing, books, reading, and electronic and digital media in cultures past and present.
Founded in 2003, it is the first program of its kind in the English language to combine the historical and contemporary engagement of culture and/with technology, the transition between oral and manuscript cultures, the advent of movable type, the development of the book, and the revolutions in communications media.
In supporting this program, St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto aims to retrieve the intellectual legacy of Marshall McLuhan who, from the heart of its campus, inspired young minds and engaged the public in probing the never-ending processes of the Gutenberg Galaxy.
