About this Event

SOLD OUT

Carola Cunningham, Teneya Gwin, and Shan Gwini have designed a full day opportunity for sharing, learning, and creating. The session will begin with an introduction to Indigenous history, culture, and teachings that guide us each day. Through discussion with participants, the group will explore ways of dismantling colonial structures and systems in order to work collaboratively with the Indigenous community, while including Indigenous perspectives and ways of doing and knowing.

In this workshop you will explore language use with community groups - think of this as a crash 101 course on how to begin conversations with community using proper protocol and references. E.g. When to use "Inuit" vs "Inuk"; Why we use "Indigenous people" vs "our Indigenous people" or "Indigenous Canadians".

In the afternoon, you will examine case studies in smaller groups. Each group will discuss how to proceed to start building relationships, concluding with a presentation to the larger group. Teneya, Shani, and Carola will guide each discussion with thoughtful reflection on each study and share how each facilitator worked on their respective case study for a successful partnership.

At the end of the workshop, participants will debrief in circle, and reflect on the learnings from the day. Each participant will go home with a takeaway to remind them of their responsibility in the journey to reconciliation going forward.

The session will be both presentation and workshop style for a full day of learning and conversation. Materials and meals will be provided.

This workshop is a precursor to the 2-day symposium Reconciliation and Resurgence: Heritage Practice in Post-TRC Edmonton. Although the pre-symposium workshop is sold out, you are encouraged to register below for the March 3-4 symposium Reconciliation and Resurgence: Heritage Practice in Post-TRC Edmonton:
