Event description

Description

Join us for a staged workshop reading of this charming play, featuring a stellar cast, in the beautiful Papermill Theatre at Todmorden Mills.

Brooklyn Avenue's Finest Hour, by Robin Cardozo

Featuring: Diana Leblanc, Deborah Drakeford, Elva Mai Hoover, Oliver Dennis, Mark Brownell, Michael MacEachern; with Dancer: Anna Jaeger; Director: Sue Miner

The Setting: Toronto 1959 - residents bask in their ‘world-class city’, confident that their multi-cultural community (well, without too many coloured folks) is poised for greatness. Toronto has a new subway, a new ballet company, and the suburbs are growing. The Queen visits, having just officially opened the St. Lawrence Seaway. During a lavish lunch hosted by Her Majesty on the Royal Yacht, a kerfuffle takes place…

Exposing Toronto’s racial and class tensions, opportunities and growing pains, the play is centered on the true life story of one of the city’s most fascinating – but now largely forgotten – historical figures. “Brooklyn Avenue’s Finest Hour” explores Toronto of 1959 with a sharp knife, but also with humour and affection.

Tickets are $25. (HST & service fees included)

There are a limited number of tickets to this workshop reading. Doors open at 7:00 pm.

Free on-site parking is available; or TTC bus 87 from Broadview Station to Mortimer, and walk down Pottery Road.
