Description

The Boreal Research Institute is offering two-day, hands-on lab and field training sessions with Dr. Dale Vitt and Dr. Bin Xu.

Participants will learn:

  1. Key characteristics of common bryophyte species associated with different peatland types in Alberta
  2. Lab and field identification methods
  3. Field practice of bryophyte identification and peatland classification


Instructors

Dr. Dale Vitt | Professor Emeritus, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois
Dr. Vitt is the technical expert of the Criteria Development Committee with over 40 years of peatland research and policy development experience.


Dr. Bin Xu | NSERC IRCC, Peatland Restoration, NAIT Boreal Research Institute, Alberta
Dr. Xu is a peatland ecologist with emphasis on understanding and mitigating human footprint on boreal peatland ecosystems. He is the current NSERC Industrial Research Chair (for Colleges), Peatland Restoration at the NAIT Boreal Research Institute based in Peace River, Alberta.

Course and Registration Details

Please only sign up for one of the two-day sessions:

  1. April 24-25, 2017: 8 am to 4:30 pm on both days OR
  2. April 26-27, 2017: 8 am to 4:30 pm on both days

Each two-day session includes lectures, labs and a half-day field trip to a peatland in the Edmonton area.

Own transportation to the field site required.


Materials Required

Appropriate field clothing and footwear (rubber boots) required.

We will provide hand lenses, forceps and a field guide of key bryophyte species.

Additional field guides are optional.
