Workshop Overview

BC Housing approved for 5 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits for licenced builders, this hands-on workshop provides a holistic perspective of the overall satisfactory performance of the building envelope when it comes to roofs and below grade wall assemblies. Supported by a wide-range of mobile building envelope assemblies, the workshop will showcase various methods of improving thermal performance, air tightness, and moisture management, ranging from those that meet the minimum Building Code requirements, to those that offer superior performance beyond the Code. In addition, all presented methods will be explored and reviewed in relation to long-term durability, accessibility to utilities, and adaptability to future repair/renovation.

With the focus on delivering hands-on and interactive learning, this workshop will prepare the industry for the adoption of BC Energy Step Code.

This interactive, collaborative workshop will use twelve NEW mobile roof and below-grade wall assemblies. Various brainstorming sessions and group work will be incorporated, to create a vibrant and energetic session to support the learning experience. In addition, an intuitive and easy to follow presentation will be developed, showcasing various interesting case studies, photographs, and a wide rage of 3D drawings specifically tailored for this workshop.

The workshop will explore:

- A wide-range of roof and below grade wall assemblies, showcasing various methods of improving thermal performance, air tightness, moisture management, long-term performance, access to utilities, and adaptability to future repair/renovation.

- Roof and below grade wall selection process along with design/construction considerations.

- Effective building envelope detailing at transitions and penetrations:

  • Roof to adjacent building envelope assemblies
  • Below grade wall to adjacent building envelope assemblies
  • Penetrations

About the Instructor

Hamid Heidarali is passionate about high performance, durable buildings that minimize their impact on the environment, while providing a superior experience for their occupants. Over the last 15 years he has consulted on building science on a wide range of construction projects in Canada. He delivers his dynamic teaching style to Masters Students in Building Envelope courses as part of the Building Science Graduate Program at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), and also presents regularly to construction professionals.

Hamid holds Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng) in Ontario and British Columbia, a LEED Accredited Professional in Canada, and a certified Passive House Tradesperson through Germany. He received his Master of Engineering in Building Science and Construction Management, and his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Hamid is a Principal at Hamid Design Build (HDB), a Building Science consulting firm, offering services with the focus on improving energy efficiency, moisture management, durability, and thermal comfort.
