About this Event

In support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities, UNACTO cordially invites you to join us for our first highly anticipated virtual event of the new year, Building a Sustainable Toronto: Plans for a Better City by 2030. We will be joined by a powerful panel of thought leaders, innovators and academic researchers to hear their insights and expertise on Toronto’s approach to urban planning, affordable housing and sustainable living.

All registered attendees will receive a personal link to join the event via Zoom.

Moderator:

Jennifer Keesmaat (Urban Planner & Former Chief City Planner of Toronto)

Speakers:

Rochelle Byrne (A Greener Future, Executive Director)

Matti Siemiatycki (University of Toronto, Associate Professor of Geography & Planning)

Roya Khaleeli (Minto Group, Director, Sustainability & Innovation)

Susan McGeachie (Hatch, Global Director, Climate Change & Sustainability Services)

Background: The world is becoming increasingly urbanized. Since 2007, more than half the world’s population has been living in cities, and that number is projected to climb to 68% by 2050, leaving no doubt that the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), will be determined in these parts of the world.

In 2020, COVID-19 hit cities particularly hard, exposing key challenges faced by them. Due to the unprecedented spread of the virus, cities have been on the frontline of coping with the pandemic and its lasting impacts. The targets outlined in SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, such as access to safe, adequate and affordable housing, prove to be critical now more than ever before.
