Organising, mobilising, and building a worker cooperative ecosystem from the ground up. How can we capitalise on our opportunities and what are the turning points we can look forward to?
Mondragon, a cooperative owned and operated by 75,000 workers, was founded in 1956. It played a major role in restoring decent livelihoods in the Basque region after the Spanish civil war. Today, it is the largest employer in the Basque region.
Fred Freundlich is a professor of cooperative enterprise and coordinator of a masters program on cooperative enterprise at the Faculty of Business, Mondragon University in the Basque Country of Spain, where he has lived since 1995. Through its applied research center, Mondragon Innovation & Knowledge – he also does research, training and technical assistance projects on broadening enterprise ownership with businesses, government agencies, unions and community organizations in the Basque Country and in a variety of other countries.
