About this event
Join our panel of educational leaders to discuss how and why anti-racist education is a vital building block that provides our young people with the skills and resources to question race dynamics, enabling them to become the future change-makers we so desperately need.
2020 has widely been called the year of 'racial reckoning'- bringing issues of racism, equity and systemic oppression into the mainstream media, and to the forefront of our minds and conversations. As adults, we grapple with these realities, often questioning our own experiences with racism, and complexity of wanting to bring about change, but being uncertain about how to proceed. Our children have the same experiences and questions; if we are to guide them we must provide the proper conditions for this learning.
In this session we will explore how curriculum can better reflect the reality of students; how do we promote a way of examining the world that enables Scarborough's incredibly diverse classrooms to truly draw from this cultural knowledge and wisdom? How do we equip students with the tools to question racism and the organizations that uphold oppression? How do we educate our young people to move through the world in a deeply reflective way, allowing them to see the intrinsic value and integrity of their peers, and themselves? How do we create an education system that develops and nurtures these values, and as a result creates a society of individuals that care about each others' well-being?
Let's explore the answers to these questions together...
And then, let's take action!
