Building Community Strength: Parc Extension In Conversation with East Harlem

This discussion between residents of Parc Extension, in conversation with members of Movement for Justice in El Barrio, will focus on the struggle for housing and acccess to services. Movement for Justice in El Barrio, which is an organization in East Harlem (New York City), has led inspiring actions and movements in their neighboorhood to keep people in their homes, push back against bad landlords, and demand people-centred city planning that comes from the bottom up.

The presentation will include some short films and a facilitated discussion.

Accessibility

Whisper translation into French will be provided. The event will take place in English.

Breaks and lunch will be provided. Participants will be encouraged to come and go as needed. Please let us know any specific needs you have regarding food by responding to the question about that on this registration form.

The building is wheelchair accessible and has automatic doors.

The bathrooms are gender-neutral and wheelchair accessible. The bathroom doors are not automatic, but there will be volunteers designated to open doors. Please let us know if you have specific questions or concerns about bathrooms.

We ask participants to minimize the scents they wear (deodorants, perfumes, scented soaps, etc) before coming. We cannot guarantee it will be a scent-free space. Please specify on the registration form if you have specific concerns.

There will be métro / bus tickets available for people who need them.

The closest metro station is Parc which is 2 blocks from the building. The 80 bus runs by the venue.

This event is a collaboration between the Centre for Community Organizations (COCo) and the Office of Community Engagement at Concordia, as well as the Comité Action Parc Extension (CAPE). The project is also suppported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council under the direction of Naomi Nichols.

Comité Action Parc Extension works to improve housing conditions for the most marginalized residents of Parc-Extension. In order to support the housing conditions and to fight for the rights of tenants, CAPE offers free information and support services, over the phone or in person, on the rights and obligations both of tenants and landlords.

Concordia's Office of Community Engagement connects student, staff and faculty at Concordia with members of the wider Montreal community through online resources, individual meetings and various public events; promotes the community-engagement efforts already underway at Concordia through our webpage, social media presence and e-newsletter; and supports the new and ongoing community-engagement efforts of students, staff and faculty at Concordia through funding opportunities, assistance with award applications and the provision of inclusive spaces on campus.

The Centre for Community Organizations aims to create a more just world through supporting the organizational health of grassroots organizations and creating spaces for dialogue about inclusion and anti-oppression in the nonprofit sector in Quebec. Providing training, resources, facilitation, and supporting organizational change, COCo contributes to the vitality of the community sector in the province.
