Event description

Description

Want to become more resilient and confident? - then volunteer.

Students who volunteer will regularly tell us they feel more confident and able to deal with problems as a result of their experience. In this session you can find out how volunteering can help you and the kind of opportunities available through the Careers and Employability Service. Through volunteering you can build the resilience needed to enter the graduate job market, stand out from the crowd and give something back to the city you have chosen to study in.

This is an interactive session which will help students assess their confidence and identify how volunteering can help students develop their their confidence further. The session will also identify the range of volunteering opportunities available through the Careers and Employability Service. You will hear about the kind of volunteering students have done in the past and how it has impacted on their confidence and their career decisions.

Presenters: Jane Howe and Janet Woolnough

Jane Howe graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 1997 with a Post Graduate Diploma in HR Management and then spent nearly 20 years working in HR and Recruitment in both the public and private sector before joining the University in 2009. After initially working in the Graduate Recruitment Team she took the opportunity to take her skill set across to Volunteering in 2012 and now leads the team in sourcing and promoting volunteering experience for students across all five faculties. The volunteering roles sourced by the team enable students to build and develop their skill sets and are are either course relevant or relevant to potential graduate career paths.

Janet Woolnough is a Careers Adviser linked to the Faculty of Business and Law and with a particular responsibility for working with International Students. She graduated from the University of Leeds, and worked within school and college careers guidance before joining the University of Portsmouth. She also worked for nearly a year as a careers adviser in a university in Australia.
