Event description
Learn how to build a healthy soil ecosystem and successfully amend soils to grow an abundant vegetable garden.

About this Event

Soil is capable of supporting plant life and is vital to life on earth, yet we understand very little about its complexities. During this workshop we’ll look at the soil ecosystem and the microbiology that helps us grow nutritious food. We'll go through how to build healthy soils, look at what annual soil care could look like for healthy vegetable garden success and learn how to ensure your plants have the ecosystems needed to thrive.

Instructor Bio: As the Site Manager and Community Education Coordinator at the Compost Education centre, Kayla Siefried practices organic gardening and permaculture in the Compost Education Centre’s gardens and in her own urban backyard. She’s gathered knowledge from a variety of wise teachers after living and working on numerous permaculture inspired food growing farms in Canada, Australia, Ecuador, Cambodia. She’s completed various permaculture and gardening trainings, after she completed her formal education at the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies. Kayla has also spent time facilitating a wide variety of learning opportunities for learners of all ages, from preschoolers all the way up to older folks. She thrives on sharing her knowledge with others, and when she’s not teaching, playing in the garden, she’s likely cooking and preserving up a storm in the kitchen, dancing, crafting, hiking or camping!

There are a limited amount of Pay-What-You-Can tickets available for folks who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC). The Compost Education Centre is in the process of examining the ways in which our program accessibility can be improved for all members of our community. This ticket gesture is by no means a fulsome examination of the systems of oppression that exist for people inside and outside of our community. We welcome your ideas and feedback.

Please pre-register for this event.

Customers can request a refund within 30 days of ticket purchase. After 30 days refunds and workshop exchanges are not permitted due to administrative staffing capacity.

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website.
