About this Event

Burnout, Compassion, Fatigue and Secondary Traumatic Stress in Caregivers

Dr. Cathy Carter-Snell, PhD, RN, SANE-A.

Dinner Provided, followed by speaker session

Caregivers provide direct services to ill and injured members of the community with expertise and empathy. It is exactly this empathy that places them at risk for consequences such as compassion fatigue. Loss of clients and loved ones brings additional trauma and may contribute to longstanding physical and mental health consequences such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this session we will discuss the similarities, differences and relationships between burnout, compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress. The discussion will include physical and mental health consequences, including PTSD, as well as risk factors and strategies to promote resiliency to each disorder.

Dr. Cathy Carter-Snell is a Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Mount Royal University in Calgary. She has worked in trauma nursing most of her career, including Emergency, Intensive Care, flight nursing, disaster nursing and most recently with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Her research and teaching focus is on reducing the effects of trauma, including risk for posttraumatic stress disorder, and facilitating resilience to stress. She has won a number of national and international awards for her work in this area and was named one of 150 difference makers in Canada for mental health in 2018.
