Butterflies in the Stomach
“Without risk there is no learning.” Carl Rogers. Think about how you learned what your limits were or how far could you push your body and as a result painting a different image of yourself. How did you learn to negotiate with friends and say ‘no’ to things you were uncomfortable with? How did you learn to take a chance on your ideas or your creativity? If everything is learned through experience, then many of you learned these valuable skills through taking a risk. Yet we are bubble-wrapping our children and shielding them from the risks that we participated in; blinding ourselves to the consequences of these actions. This workshop will explore the kinds of risk in children’s play; from infants to school age, what they learn from it and how we can allow children to risk safely.
